Freeze Frame Quilt for an Hour

Here is the quilt top, finished. Doesn't look much like Judy's original, but I like it. I feel pretty good because I used up set aside fabric, and bits from a quilt I was never going to make, and it's done.

QFAH with the Next Border

I'm liking it much better now. The top and bottom borders are already attached, the two side borders, not yet. Not only did I use some blocks I had made, but I like this a lot too. Because I wasn't too sure of the colors, having more blocks in those colors wouldn't have been a good thing, I think this works just fine.

Quilt for an Hour-Border

I thought I was going to have the 9-patch blocks going different directions, but I didn't pay attention when I sewed on the first part of the border, so they'll be going all the same direction. I guess that's the way they were supposed to go!

Border Mock-Up

I have these 9-patches that were going to go in the original quilt (that I am now not making) and I would like to use them. I think they'll look just fine as the border in the quilt. I've done my thing in Paint, and I think they'll work. Plus, I have them already made, so that should speed things up some. What do you think, my version above, and Judy's below.

QFAH Picture with Better Lighting

Sunny today, so I got a picture of the QFAH in natural light. This is much closer to the actual colors than the previous pictures. I decided to look for a different light (maybe lavender or aqua) but didn't find anything that was speaking to me, so I'll go with white.

One More Time QFAH

I'm all caught up. I'm going to try to take this outside this weekend to see if I can get a picture that has truer colors. I'm liking this more. I'll have to wait and see with the rest of the blocks. Kaleena mentioned that it was calm when I was thinking it was boring, I'll go with that.

Since I'm caught up, I'll be able to work on the dancing 9-patches that I started last week. If I get 6 more done, the top is done and I'll have to figure out a border. I'm actually thinking of a pieced border--I never do that.

I've decided to go through the pain for the moment, and see if my original vision will be palatable. So, here are the center blocks. I still have plenty of blocks around the outside to make. If you want to see what the whole thing is supposed to look like, check this out.

QFAH Step #2 finished

It's gloomy outside, so no natural light. I'm liking it a bit better. Paula suggested a bit of zing with a red/orange. I'm not much of a red/orange girl, but I'll look through all my bits and pieces and see if I can come up with some. One of the problems is that it doesn't photograph at all well, but I'll take a picture once I get the red/orange in there and see what you think.

2nd Hour QFAH-more blocks

I'm reserving judgment. Right now I am a bit underwhelmed, but maybe it will come together. It's not that pattern that I'm doubting, it's my color choices. If my light background was black I bet I would like it.

I'm doing the old "wait and see", but I'm not giving up. Even if I hate it, someone out there will love it...and on the plus side--I'M CAUGHT UP!

Quilt for an Hour-Freeze Frame

So far, I'm not too impressed with the colors I've chosen. We'll see how it comes together. I tell you what, I do NOT sew nearly as fast as Judy. She has these directions in one-hour chunks and this took me longer than an hour, probably about double that. The white I used is more loosely woven than I usually use and I am pinning so it doesn't get pulled out of shape. The colors are not very accurate here, but it gives you an idea of what to expect.

The top is done and I like it. I'm thinking of who it might go to--I'm not sure yet. I like the way it turned out, and now I'm thinking of what I might do next.

Quilt for an Hour-Summer 2008

Here are the blocks put together. I still have to put the first border around, but I'm taking a bit of a break and thought I'd post the progress I've made so far. I like it. I didn't mention it in the last post, but this was a pattern from Judy Laquidara last summer. She has quilt alongs and all sorts of fun stuff--and I may actually finish this one before the end of the weekend.

Suitable for Framing

I've stopped working on the Quilt for an Hour for a while. A friend's daughter is sick and in the hospital so I decided she needed a quilt. It's based on Suitable for Framing. Here is a picture of what I've completed so far. The young lady I'm making it for is in her mid-teens and has a bedroom that features lime green, purple, pink and blue. The colors aren't exactly true here, but you get the idea. The white looking fabric in the upper right is actually a light teal. When it's daylight, I'll take a picture that hopefully has more accurate color.

Here's what the whole quilt will look like--though obviously in other colors.


By the way, on the Quilt for and Hour, I've decided to leave the peach squares in the middle and the blue on the outside. With the blue outside, I don't even see the weird square anymore. Thanks to all of you who shared your opinion

Quilt for an Hour

All the blocks are done. Now I have to live with them for a bit to see if I want to move any of them. I'm going to live with the one block for a while, but just glancing at the picture above has me thinking I'm going to be changing that dang block out. I like the colors--I have to try the diamonds reversed though--making the peachy ones the main ones in each block and see if I like that better--of if it's just different.

Couldn't wait--which one is better?

A bit more progress

I'm finally going to get this quilt for an hour done. They're not sewn together yet, and they're not placed where they'll go,but I like these blocks. All the fabrics are batiks, and there's that one bit on the second star down, second from the right that has a blue square that I'm really noticing. I don't know if I am going to replace it or not, but right now it's bugging me--does it bother you too?

Spin Cycle Top-finished and Quilt for and Hour

Thanks to Marilyn's suggestion I figured out what to do with the border. She reminded me of the pink-peach batik I had. I tried it as the border, and it was a bit too light, but then I though of adding the fabric I used for the blocks. Because of the way the blocks are cut, I only had 22" widths of the fabric, and didn't think I would like so many seams in the border, so I added 1" strips of the pink, I think it finishes off the quilt, without adding too much heaviness, thanks Marilyn.

I am still working on the Quilt for an Hour. I have all the pieces for the blocks put together, now I just have to assemble the blocks. Once that is done, it should be a quick job to put the top together.

Yesterday was my birthday, and one of the local quilt shops gives you half of your age as a discount during your birthday week--how could I pass up a 27% discount? I decided I like the spin cycle pattern so much, that I bought more fabric to make another one; but it will be quite a different look. The cream is the background, the purple the strips in the middle of the sashing, and the pink, the cornerstones and border. At the moment I really like it.

Quilt for an Hour-I haven't given up

Here is where I am on the quilt for an hour-I have decided that today I try to catch up--we'll see how far I get. I'm going to try to be done by this Friday when Judy removes the links--hope I do it!

Quilt for an Hour update and Graduation Project

I cut all the bits and pieces for the quilt for an hour--took a VERY long time. I thought the angle was 45 degrees--not so. I cut some pieces then did a trial square with the star points, it didn't come out even close to right--so back to the drawing board. I finally figured out that it has the same star points as the "54 40 or fight" block and found a site online that had templates--that lead me to the correct angles--I had a lazy angle ruler that had the right ones and so all the pieces are cut. I cut the paper template that I found and taped it to the lazy angle ruler and that worked for me.

I have started the next project. My niece is graduating from college at the end of the month. I've had the fabric for about 3-4 years and decided the time is now. It's going to be a stack n whack--Spin Cycle. The pattern was in the Fons and Porter Love of Quilting May-June 2006. I think it's going to be fun.

The colors aren't exactly right--The orange in the blocks below matches the orange behind the ruler in the pic above. I am going to have the orange for sashing--I haven't decided if I'm going to have black or white as the corner triangles and around each block. I think I'll have to try and see.
