...and the Top is Done

I like the way this one looks. I have no idea how I'm going to quilt it, but I really like the way it finally turned out. I didn't want black for the border. I was going to use a light blue around the gray, but I think it's done.

I like the secondary pattern of the stars. It was fun figuring out how to make the borders fit around the hexagons. It's about 67 x 84. It will be big enough for the top of the queen bed in the guest room, but not a whole lot bigger than that.

I just found "Let's Bee Social" on Sew Fresh Quilts and love the blog. She also has a link party, so I've decided to join. If you want to see some more quilts, check here.

I also decided to share on WIP Wednesday on  Freshly Pieced and you can see more quilts here.

Whew! That was fun!

What a challenge! I like the design and how it turned out but I didn't think about how I was going to piece it when I designed it. I enjoyed the process though and I can now piece patterns with partial seams without blinking an eye...I did a lot of them.

I think I am going to add a border, but I don't know what yet. maybe a darker green, maybe a blue, maybe both.

The top is about 90 x 60 right now, which makes it an oversize twin. I have a queen bed for the guest room, maybe I'll enlarge it to fit that bed.

I ended up cutting the pieces to fill in the background all at once, and then having to recut them because I estimated wrong. Of course I had already partially sewn a number of them in before I realized. There is one background piece that still needs to be taken out an replaced (upper right). It's about 1/2 inch too short. I was tired so I'll do it later.

Design Wall October 15, 2012

Here is what is on the design wall at the moment. I finished the first alphabet quilt and decided to do at least one more, but with a few modifications to the shapes of the letters. I used graph paper to draw them out, and am being a bit more intentional about the shapes and colors I am using.

Here is the plan with the altered letters. I found some free graph paper online and printed out 8 squares to the inch, because I'm making 8 inch squares, then I just count the squares to know how big to make the pieces. It makes it much easier.

Here is the finished top. I like the way this one came out too, and now I just need to quilt it. I think I'll probably use gray thread for the quilting, though I may end up using matching or complementary colors for quilting the letters. I planned to use a fleece back, but perhaps I'll change that to flannel, much more baby friendly.

Alphabet Quilt Top

I like it! Now to quilt it. Don't know what I'm going to do, but I'll figure something out. I want to make another one using prints...and I was thinking white for the background, but that just doesn't make sense for a baby quilt.

It was fun to piece the letters. I didn't really plan, just looked at the shapes and made them up as I went along. I will change a few I think...the O, the P and the R for sure. Maybe A and V.

Fun quilt and didn't take too long, but it did make a mess. Fleece for the backing/batting I believe.

I don't know if I'll get this done it time, but if I do it's off for the new baby on the 23rd.

Quick Strip Quilt

I finished this top today. It would have been done much faster but I had a nasty cold and just couldn't stay focused long enough to work on it. It is from a strip set I cut from the guild's stash for charity quilts. I have 3 more strip sets I hope to pass out to ladies at the next guild meeting so they might make a quilt too.

It was taller than it was wide, so I took the extra blocks I had and cut them into three strips each and added them to the sides. I think I'll back it with fleece and call it good.

Simple. Quick (relatively). Done.

Modern Bargello Top is Done

Well here is it pieced. I took this inside (of course) because I don't have a place to take it without direct sunlight. When the sun goes behind the mountains I'll move it outside and take one. It will be interesting to see the difference in the colors. The proportions aren't quite right. I think I need to make it a bit shorter, or a bit wider. I'll have to look at it more closely...but I really like it.

I'm still debating whether I should add a top and bottom border with squares of color. What do you think? No border, or border? At the moment I'm leaning toward no border. Click on the pictures to enlarge them.

I have no idea how I am going to finish it, but I have faith that I'll figure it out.

It's hard to get a good picture....

especially in the evening when the winds start to shift...

the colors are much better here...

so I waited till the sun was behind the mountains....ta dah!
The colors are much more true in this picture, though the inside photo isn't awful.

Border is on

I have the border on the next baby quilt. I have to figure out how I am going to quilt it now. I think I want to quilt each block, but I need to figure out what I am going to do. The quilt itself is pretty squarish, so maybe something roundish.

I may piece the back from the fabrics I used on the quilt. They were 1/2 yard cuts, and I had some left over from each fabric I used.
